Attending an Orlando Tiki Party at Will’s Pub

Two Sundays back, I attended a tiki party hosted by Orlando’s Will’s Pub, located on Mills Avenue. Will’s Pub  first scheduled the event  on the lakefront of Lake Holden Gardens. Permit issues forced the party to move back to Will’s Pub.

A tiki theme decorated the venue. Plus music was provided by Uke-A-Ladies, The Wildtones and The Sh-Booms.  Also, food truck Da Kine Poke sold Hawaiian food.

I enjoyed myself that day.  Here’s some pics.

Speakeasy: The Last Night of an Orlando Poetry Night

Tod Caviness

Last month, I attended the last night for Speakeasy, one of Orlando’s longest spoken-word nights. Originally, the poetry nights started as The Backroom Words. Then, when Tod Caviness took over, it ended as Speakeasy.

Tod ended the night with these words.

The good news is, I won’t have to give the sex talk. By the time my kid starts making midnight milkshakes, they’ll have fleshbots for that sort of thing. Or third grade sex ed, or Broad City reruns. In any case, I plan on being senile.

The bad news is, senile or no, I will one day have to tell him about Speakeasy. He’ll be timehopping around Twitbook and there will be these pictures. Dad with heavy eyelids and a toothless smirk. That parody of a Wal-Mart greeters’ grin on the kid with the dirty blond hair. The goateed stick figure in a Jesus Christ pose. Dudes dressed up like homeless samurai. Things that allude to worse behavior than there actually was; faces that beg for names. And let’s face it, I can barely remember your names as it is.

Compounding the problem will be the fact that I’ll have to explain poetry to a human being who communicates entirely in emoticons, as we all will one day.

Crazy smiley face / microphone / LOL, he’ll say. Pot leaf / questionmark?

No, I’ll say, we weren’t on drugs. OK, some of us were on drugs. Look, forget it. Before we get into the drinks, the post-show meltdowns, the onstage meltdowns, the endless hangovers, you have to know there were easier ways to get all these things. Even in a place where that let the weird kids on stage six nights a week, we were the weird kids. Watching the regulars ignore us and sneak past to get to the bar was making love in a restaurant and seeing everybody else just sit there playing with their food. Some nights, I almost wished I could join them. Because not only was the sex that bad, it was metaphorical. Unlike the kind the people at the bar would be having.

What happened was, we all had this problem with words. They could be as meaningless back then as they are now, but we loved them all the same. The easy words like booty and ribcage. The difficult words like democracy and alpaca. We spent our days herding these little wayward fuckers around. Taking them in and tending their wounds after the 6:00 news had kicked them in the teeth. Put a gun in their hands. And then, once a week or once a month we’d get together and make them march in straight lines. Sent them to war on each other’s hearts and groins. Shoot the shit like any other barfly, only with armor-piercing ammo.

Okay, he’ll say. But goatee smiley face / dick pic / questionmark?

Look, kid. It wasn’t all pen strokes and politics. Sometimes the best times had nothing to do with poetry. And you really shouldn’t bring that up. Your Uncle Trevor has been reviewing septuagenarian erotica ever since that Tribune / Pornhub merger. I don’t even think he can stand to look at his own penis anymore, let alone Lindsey. It doesn’t help that the Pierres wrote, shot and starred in most of those movies.

But I like to remember the old gang the way they were. Patrick, back before his job with the L.A. paparazzi turned him illiterate. Curtis, whose last book of poetry was composed entirely of made-up slang. Jesse, whose scathing critique of it was the last thing ever published in English by the New York Times Sunday Book Review. Joe, who’s still trying to maintain a decent poetry scene in Brevard County despite the fact that it’s underwater. Brendan, before Michael Bay got the rights to his latest young adult trilogy.

And Butch? Well, Butch is actually doing alright since he started writing episodes for that new Star Trek series. And he’ll continue to do alright as long as those checks keep coming in and that video of the 12 Step Aside Program stays hidden in my safe.

As will happen anytime I speak continuously for more than 30 seconds, it will take my son awhile to pause his game of Angry Birds vs. Duck Dynasty on the VR interface, and notice that I’m still talking. With luck, he’ll catch me before I slide fully into senile reverie and ask me: Pointed finger / open book / gravestone / questionmark?

And I’ll smile like any man who no longer has to get up to pee. Well, I’ll say, yes and no. It’s true your Dad doesn’t write much anymore. But it’s also true that I never really stopped.

You see, I’ve always been shitty with endings. The tidy little moral. The awkward feedback after the mic drops. Wrapping things up in a bow made of fortune cookie slips so I could make it to the bar for one last beer. So the last night, I said, fuck it. I wrote a story that I never finished. The thing just kept on going as the bullshit at the bar became the verses, the private jokes the chorus. The line breaks measured in hugs and bathroom visits, the background music pacing out an unconscious rhythm. I add another few pages every time I visit that bar, even if I have to edit out the parts with Will Walker because the last coherent word that dude said was in 2018.

If I’m lucky, he’ll still be paying attention. If I’m lucky, he’ll be scrolling through his infinite pages of little faces, looking for the one that gets my goat, that pisses me off, that makes me laugh. And all the while, I’ll be looking at his.

Fuck it, I’ll say. Let’s go to Will’s.

Orlando’s most flavored taste makers have come back home. Lazy Afternoon Sundays at the end of each month will be going down AND with some serious special guests!

This month we have Bobbito Garcia a.k.a. Kool Bob Love returning with love alongside DJ Nigel Jon on the opening set.

NYC native and world-renowned DJ Bobbito Garcia is the critically acclaimed author of Where’d You Get Those? NYC’s Sneaker Culture: 1960-1987 (Testify Books). The former NY Knicks/MSG Network halftime reporter was the voice of EA Sports’ popular NBA Street video game and TV host of ESPN2’s “It’s the Shoes” series. In 2007, Nike released seven co-designed Air Force 1 sneakers bearing his signature. In 2013, Garcia co-directed the film Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC. Currently, he is the announcer for ESPNU’s Elite 24 Game and his own tournament Full Court 21™. “Kool Bob Love” is also directing his next film titled Stretch And Bobbito, due for release in 2015.

From 1990 to 1998, García co-hosted The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show on WKCR. It featured exclusive demo tapes and in-studio freestyles from many then-unsigned hip hop artists such as Nas, Big Pun, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Cam’ron, DMX, Wu-Tang Clan, Fugees, Talib Kweli, Big L and The Notorious B.I.G. who later found great success on major record labels.[4] He set up the vinyl-only label Fondle ‘Em Records in 1995 as an outlet for other guests such as MF DOOM, MF Grimm, Kool Keith and Cage. In 1998 The Source named The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show as the “Best Hip Hop Radio Show of All Time”.[citation needed]

In 2000 hip hop artist Necro included a Live freestyle from a Bobbito WKCR show recorded on 4/20/2000 on his debut album “I need Drugs”. The two have collaborated as early as 1994.

In 2003, García created Bounce: From the Playground,[citation needed] a quarterly magazine devoted to streetball, especially the playground scene in New York City. He has been an editor, writer, and photographer for the magazine, and has also done work for and been featured in magazines including Vibe and The Source. He wrote Where’d You Get Those?: New York City’s Sneaker Culture 1960-1987. He hosted the ESPN show It’s the Shoes, interviewing celebrities about their sneaker collection. He was featured in the sneaker documentary Just for Kicks and performed the announcer’s voice in NBA Street Vol. 2, NBA Street V3 and NBA Street Showdown. He is emcee of the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest in the video game NBA 2K8, 2K9 and 2K10.[citation needed]

In 2006, Madison Square Garden Network hired García to do the “Hot Minute at the Half” reports with celebrities in the crowd during Knicks home games. He became the first Latino broadcast member in the 60-year history of the franchise.[citation needed] In 2007, he worked with Nike on limited edition Nike Air Force 1 and Air Force 25 models, selecting the colors, fabrics and logo used, and designed the “Project Playground” limited edition of the Adidas Superstar.[citation needed] In 2009, he worked on Blokhedz animated web series on[citation needed]

García is the annual Boost Mobile Elite 24 HS All-American Game play-by-play announcer for ESPNU, owner of the vinyl-only label/imprint Álala Records, and co-directing, with Kevin Couliau, the documentary Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-up Basketball, New York City by 360 Creative Films, which premiered in New York theaters in June 2013.[5]

4. SceneOrlando LIVE :::ENEI::: Starts 10pm at Sandwich Bar, located 2432 E Robinson St, Orlando, Florida 32803.

Words from Facebook:

Sceneorlando LIVE is proudly hosting Critcal Music artist

Hailing from St. Petersburg in Russia it was way back in 2003 that a young Alexey Egorchenkov first got the taste for the musical drug Drum & Bass. Like many others before him he became hooked, dabbling with his own production and DJing soon after. Taking the artist name Enei his career began to blossom giving him star status in his beloved Russia and far but it wasn’t until 2007 that things really began to escalate.

During this year Enei earned his first official release on the Dutch label Fokuz but it was the first of many as others began to drop on other imprints such as Blu Saphir, Cyanide and Citrus throughout 2008 and 2009. Whilst his productions and profile began to take shape a certain eagle-eyed label boss, renowned for his supreme A&R’ing, was keeping close tabs on him; it wasn’t long before the phone call was made and Kasra secured the first Enei release for Critical Music at the end of 2010. The rest as they say, is history.

Releasing the Andy C favourite ‘Cracker’, ‘One Chance’ and the much lauded ‘Stone Head EP’, Enei’s Critical discography is relatively short but seeing the sheer talent within Kasra signed him exclusively for the label in 2011. It was Enei’s biggest year and to top it off he came away the ‘Best Newcomer Producer’ accolade at the end of year Drum & Bass Arena Awards.

As we enter 2012 things are only getting better for Russia’s number 1 producer/DJ; his debut album is complete and scheduled for early summer whilst a slew of remix work continues to pour in. With his music supported by Goldie, London Elektricity, Bailey, DJ Hype, Andy C, Kasra and many more, and an ever increasing DJ’ing schedule, you can guarantee this is merely the start of it as one of the most exciting of the new producers generation in electronic music today continues to make his way.

Gets you into both Spacebar and Sandwich Bar

5. SceneOrlando LIVE :::6.28.15::: with Pat Fontes: Starts 10pm at Spacebar, located 2428 E Robinson St, Orlando, Florida 32803.

Pat Fontes June 28

Words from Facebook:

Special Edition on a Sunday

We are very excited to veer from our normal format of the first Saturday for this Edition of :::LIVE:::

Pat Fontes

Pat Fontes’ knowledge of electronic music has made him into what many have stated as a connoisseur of sorts. With almost two decades of DJing experience on his resume from the underground to clubs all over the world this former owner, manager, music buyer of the now legendary Satellite Records Boston has built a strong reputation for himself. He is the man responsible for one of Boston’s longest running underground house, techno, and electronic oddities weeklies at the Phoenix Landing Wednesdays. It went by many names but was most well known as Midweek Techno with his friends Soul Clap. He has had the honor of being exposed to many industry heavy-weights and has opened for the likes of Martin Buttrich, Paco Osuna, The Orb, Timo Maas, Cassy, Pan Pot , Layo & Bushwacka, Peace Division, Chris Fortier just to name a few.

Pat is now pushing boundaries again and providing his own dirty, sweaty, synth infected, sexy swag to his DJ sets and original productions. His sound falls under the umbrellas of techno & house but he has always developed his own unique spin on these genres and tends to bend every aspect of conventional thoughts towards them. He has had releases on well known labels such as Thoughtless Music and Airdrop Records. Now with many remixes and originals coming, Pat has joined a new pack of like minded artists on Prisoner of Love Records – Private Business – Proper Slap – Tight Groove – to name a few

Being quoted by his peers as “Mr. Techno” this humble encyclopedia of electronic music knowledge has been there, and done that, and is still finding ways to capture the imagination of others through his music!

Life’s too short… listen to music !

(Prisoner of Love – Proper Slap – Thoughtless Music | Private Business | Tight Groove) Suburbs of Boston, MA

“Pat is one of the most humble Dj’s I have ever had the pleasure of booking. His aptitude and proficiency behind the decks demonstrate years of devotion and passion to his practiced craft. ”

His consistency has rewarded him with top billing at festivals and clubs including Hyte, EDC, Electric Zoo, Output, Pacha and Cielo. A style all his own, Shahar’s brand of dark, pulsing and often atmospheric techno has earned him the respect of Hector, Chaim, Gel Abril and Danny Tenaglia amongst others.

~Torque 16 Year Anniversary~

Celebrating 16 Years of pushing Drum ‘n Bass Inside the City Beautiful.

Friction / Shogun Audio / UK

Its been another amazing year for multi award winning drum & Bass superstar DJ Friction. As well as continuing to DJ all over the world and his label Shogun Audio establishing itself as one of the most respected labels on the planet, he has produced some of the biggest tracks of the last 12 months. ‘Stand Up’ (vs Camo & Krooked), his remix of Wretch 32’s ‘Traktor’ and his stomping remix of ‘Sweetshop’ (w Camo & Krooked) have torn dancefloor’s to shreds all over the place with a storming remix of Vato Gonzalez’s ‘Badman Riddim’ to be followed by brand new solo material.

If your coming to witness a Friction DJ set, prepare to be blown away with mix after mix because this man never disappoints!

Cory Branan (solo acoustic)
with guests Austin Miller, Henry Toland & Christina Bowers

doors at 9 pm / 18+ / $10-12
tickets available at: & Park Ave CDs

Throughout his career, Cory Branan has been too punk for country, too country for punk, too Memphis for Nashville, and probably a little too Cory Branan for anyone’s damn good. He has proven himself as a top-notch songwriter (Chuck Ragan recently called him “the greatest songwriter of our generation”), fierce lyricist (in Lucero’s “Tears Don’t Matter Much” they sing that Cory has, “a way with words that’ll bring you to your knees”), and a hyperdynamic performer with the ability to fingerpick finer than ‘60s Greenwich Village folkies and brutally strum like a proto punk shredder. Across three albums, he’s made collective struggles poetic and breakthroughs into sympathetic acts of populist heroism.

Cory Branan is a natural-born storyteller, his seemingly conversational, painstakingly crafted anecdotes benefitting from a hard-eyed stare at hydra-headed life experiences. Not unlike his musical and literary pedestal sitters, from John Prine and Leonard Cohen to Raymond Carver and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Cory’s gift for detail and phrase-turning is a thing of wonder.

Cory has a well-documented history with groups like former label mates Lucero, musicians of his ilk who trend toward the rawer end of roots music (The Loved Ones’ Dave Hause, Chuck Ragan, The Hold Steady, The Gaslight Anthem, Two Cow Garage, Drag the River’s Jon Snodgrass), and rock stars like Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional), who has covered Cory’s gorgeous “Tall Green Grass” and been a reoccurring tour mate.

Never one to shy away from an itinerary of non-stop cross-country shows, Cory possesses a unique performance style that enables him to gravelly sing a coy double entendre in one ear of the audience, while yelling the most beautiful love song into the other.

More about Jon Charnis

After years of producing music under various guises, Jon Charnis found his true calling in the slower, darker, and deeper shades of house music. This re-invention was part of a bigger shift in the artist’s life, as he relocated from Washington DC to Los Angeles, and launched a new moniker under his actual birth name. From there on, it didn’t take long to make his impact felt. His track ‘Prophecy’ was spotted by Innervisions boss, Dixon, who signed the track to his prestigious Berlin based label after road testing it at some of the world’s premier parties. He followed this up with an official remix of Art Department’s Burning Man anthem, ‘Robot Heart’ on No.19 Music, a collaboration with production partners Lovecraft and Prab K. The streak continued with releases on more top labels including Supernature, All Day I Dream, and Leftroom Records.

As a DJ, Jon Charnis’ international profile has risen just as quickly. With gigs at world renowned spots including Space, Ibiza and Sonar, Barcelona, 2013 saw Jon playing across the globe in Berlin, Munich, London, and Amsterdam. Further, 2014 has already seen appearances across the US, South America, and Europe, as this fast rising musician continues to bring his unique brand of melodic, powerful, and expertly crafted music to the dancefloor.

Jon Charnis has received support by world renowned DJs such as Tale Of Us, Dixon, Ame, Art Department, Thugfucker, John Digweed, Steve Lawler, and Audiofly to name a few.

As a trained jazz musician growing up, many say his roots influence his signature style and groove selection in the club. He is curator of HereAndNow, a monthly podcast with acclaimed international guests, as well as parties of the same brand. As his productions pick up and his reputation grows, look for HEIGHTS at a club or festival near you!
