Most Viewed Photos of 2014

As the year ends, I’ve decided to pick the most viewed pic from each photo gallery blog.  As most pics are Year 2014, some date as far back as the 1980’s. Some blogs contain a tie in top viewership. Both pics of the tie were included.

Except were indicated, most photos were by me.

Enjoy!

San Francisco’s Sunshine Jones Uplifts Orlando’s Sandwich Bar

Last Friday, I witnessed a new experience at Orlando’s Sandwich Bar. San Francisco’s Sunshine Jones sung lyrics and performed spoken word over house beats. Sunshine Jones at Orlando's Sandwich Bar

In a good way, his sermons reminded me of the house classic “Can You Feel It” by Fingers Inc.

In the 1990s, Sunshine traveled with Moonbeam Jones as Dubtribe Sound System.  Since then, he’s traveled the world.

Many people enjoyed the Orlando performance. Some danced and others watched in amazement.

Local trio Queens of Noise opened.

As usual, they rocked the house.  On December 13 at Venue 578, they open for Kristian Nairn best known as  Hodor from Game of Thrones.

Closing the event was Atnarko Bear.

I always enjoy nights at Sandwich Bar.  Yet, I think Sunshine Jones might be one of the most memorable.

House Music Legend Derrick Carter Grooves Orlando Crowd

Last Friday, house music legend Derrick Carter headlined at Orlando’s The Social. Considered one of the top DJs in the world, Carter started his craft in Chicago’s underground scene. Actually, he started DJing at age nine. At this time, he DJed family reunions. In early adulthood, he released his first single “Love Me Right”.

People call him a house DJ. Yet, at The Social, Derrick Carter pleasantly mixed beyond typical house music sounds. He mixed disco, funk and soul right along with house. People danced and rode the happy mood right along with him.  His skills definitely showed why he’s considered one of the world’s best DJs.

In the past decade and to the present, as I photographed events, DJs mostly played house music. With my knowing house music originated in Chicago, Derrick Carter was a personal first for me. I had never witnessed the skills of a Chicago house DJ before, especially a legend.

It’s like hearing so much about the blues, music created by Mississippi musicians. Then, finally, you witness the performance of a Mississippi blues entertainer. With no disrespect to other performers of the genre, seeing the Mississippi entertainer makes the blues performance feel and look more authentic. That’s how I saw Derrick Carter. When it came to house music, I was witnessing the real deal.

Orlando’s Queens of Noise opened the event.  The female trio contains Lola B, Candice B and Fox Force005. Once a month, they play Sandwich Bar, located in Orlando’s Milk District.  Before Derrick arrived onstage, Queens of Noise already had people dancing.

Many Orlando, house music, fans missed a great evening.  For doing that, they ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Orlando’s Queens of Noise Choose Good Time-Inspiring Songs at Sandwich Bar

Last Friday, Joe Vaught drove him and I to another Sandwich Bar event.  For new readers, Sandwich Bar exists in Orlando’s Milk District.

Tonight’s event featured Queens of Noise, an all-female DJ trio.

Once a month, Queens of Noise plays house music at Sandwich Bar.  Tonight’s event was called Valley of the Dolls, named after the same-titled book and movie.

Despite the good sounds and happy atmosphere, the crowd size disappointed Joe and I.  We felt Queens of Noise deserved more people showing up.  Don’t get me wrong. The place definitely wasn’t empty.  Still, Queens of Noise deserves a larger audience.  Truth be known, they are far better than many male DJs. Instead of look-at-me-I’m-a-DJ, Queens of Noise preferred choosing good time-inspiring songs.  People dancing came before ego. I noticed the same thing with Sandra Collins when she performed at Sandwich Bar.

Like I mentioned earlier, Queens of Noise performs Sandwich Bar once a month.  I recommend attending their nights.  This Friday at The Social, they open for house music legend Derrick Carter.
