Attending an Orlando Tiki Party at Will’s Pub

Two Sundays back, I attended a tiki party hosted by Orlando’s Will’s Pub, located on Mills Avenue. Will’s Pub  first scheduled the event  on the lakefront of Lake Holden Gardens. Permit issues forced the party to move back to Will’s Pub.

A tiki theme decorated the venue. Plus music was provided by Uke-A-Ladies, The Wildtones and The Sh-Booms.  Also, food truck Da Kine Poke sold Hawaiian food.

I enjoyed myself that day.  Here’s some pics.

Three Good Reasons to Admire Kanye West

reuters-kanye-west_1200-600x600

Almost every month, I witness Facebook hatred aimed at Kanye West, most of it about something he said or allegedly said.

Yet, I still admire Mr. West. These are three reasons why you should too.

1. Kanye’s music does what it supposed to do. I don’t care how Kanye makes his music. Keyboard? Sampler? An actual instrument? I don’t give a shit. If it entertains, the music succeeds. Kanye’s album sales and awards prove this.

For those who doubt Kanye’s talent, try his production style and see if it works for you. If it doesn’t work for you, it may prove the only thing you’re really good at is talking shit about other people, especially ones making more money than you.

Some people may accuse me of being manipulated by Big Corporate Media. Oh, go fuck yourselves. Save that conspiracy theory for white Australian women rapping in a Southern African-American dialect. Then, we can discuss Big Corporate Media manipulating people into buying shitty music.

As for now, I’m sticking with the claim Kanye produces good music.

2. Kanye married a beautiful woman with a nice booty. I can see the hate now. So many people see themselves above Kim Kardashian. As for her porn video? For the hatred aimed at Mrs. West, I don’t remember the same amount of hatred aimed at the famous girlfriends or wives of rock stars, women who also recorded porn videos with their other halves.

Also, was it the Kardashians’ fault people were willing to watch (as of this writing) eleven seasons of their reality show? Producers of that show saw the dollar signs and grabbed them. Don’t blame the Kardashians for a successful reality series. Blame the people who want to keep up with the Kardashians.

All that aside, Kim Kardashian is a beautiful woman with a nice onion booty, my kind of trophy lady.

3. Kanye’s words contain truth. I credit this reason to my buddy Rick Morrow. After Beck won the 2015 Grammy for Best Album, Kanye held the audacity to speak his mind. Hell, he even walked onstage as if he was going to take Beck’s award. Then, during an interview, he criticized Beck’s winning.

Defending his winning the award, folks called Beck a true artist. Because you know, Beck writes his own music and plays instruments. That’s cool. Still, folks refused admitting the hard cold truth about Beck’s award winning album Morning Phase.

It sucks.

The album is full of boring music attempting a late sixties and early seventies rock sound. But you know, Beck is a true artist.

Kayne saw right through the horse manure and called it out. He said the Grammys was playing with artists. He was right. Why nominate Beyonce for Best Album when there was no way in hell she was going to win? According to “experts” on Facebook, Beyonce lost because she doesn’t play instruments or write her own  music. So, why nominate her in the first place? Why play with artists like that? (For those of you saying Beyonce isn’t an artist, go drink your hater juice somewhere else. Also, she does write her own music.)

At that moment, Kanye brought up a subject many people walk away from. Like my buddy Rick Morrow said, the small truth in Kanye’s words is what pisses some people off the most about him. During Grammy 2015, his words hinted at racism. A talented black woman released an album loved by many, but she was passed over for a white guy’s mediocre album. This is what pissed folks off about Kanye’s Grammy actions. He touched on a truth many folks refused to see. But you know, Beck is a true artist.

This wasn’t the first time Kanye called out the truth. During Hurricane Katrina, he said President Bush didn’t like black people. Folks freaked out. Yet, Kanye was right. During Hurricane Katrina, a disaster affecting predominately black New Orleans, Bush took his sweet time responding.

No matter how crazy Kanye comes across, I gotta give it up to a person who speaks the truth.

So, these are my three reasons for admiring Kanye West.  Those who don’t like it can lick my ass.

Is the Word “Legend” being Overused in Orlando’s DJ Community?

Eye Spy Dance Floor 3

Before I reached the venue, I heard the headliner DJ was a legend. When I finally heard the legend’s set, disappointment crumbled me.

At another venue, I heard the same thing about another headliner DJ. They were called a legend.

By this time, it appeared “legend” applied to anyone over age forty and DJed since the late eighties or early nineties.

Like the previous legend, this legend’s set tanked also.

Sometimes, I wonder why Orlando falls for this legend crap. Some joker whose heydays are long gone gets the royal treatment…and tanks. Some I even wonder why they are called legend.

It isn’t just the DJ thing either. Recently, I heard an “experienced” promoter owns a nasty habit of not paying DJs. How did the “experienced” person gain access to Orlando’s DJ community? My guess is they talked a lot bullshit folks wanted to hear. Usually the bullshit involves promising success that never happens.

I understand if said DJ created or helped a movement. Yet, does longevity in the game automatically qualifies someone as a legend?

I found out I wasn’t the only one tired of hearing the word “legend”. An Orlando Facebook friend’s post flat-out said the word was being overused.

So, is that the case? Is the word “legend” being overused in Orlando’s DJ community?

Love is Dead in the Orlando EDM Scene

Crowd Dancing at Roxy Orlando

The following post is a guest blog by Sid Spurious.

Before anyone loses it, there is love. There are beautiful, soulful, loving couples, and they are usually the backbone of the underground scene. However, they are in the significant minority of club hopping freaks. The majority is a melting pot of single dudes in their 20’s and 40’s and women in their 30’s and 40’s.

The young single boys are full of energy and hormones. They get a pass for their wicked ways because of the lack of blood flow to their mushy little brains. It isn’t their fault! The Orlando EDM scene is seething with good vibes, scantily clad women, and bass lines that make women jiggle. These post-emo bucks, hopefully, have enough wherewithal to imply deeper intent to their target, and perhaps sometimes it’s true. But quickly after tasting the raver candy, the sun comes up, and the party is done.

Girls in their 20’s don’t know what they want, so they don’t count. They are looking for attention, which means they have a lot of sex. Promiscuity in the dark rooms of an after party is a rite of passage too many up-and-coming social wannabees fall victim to. It’s not the young strumpets’ fault, they don’t comprehend the real value of the pudenda. But, it’s tough to comprehend anything when you are still finding the line between slightly buzzed and ‘that girl.’

Electro-scene newbies are exploring the territory and having fun. The girls want ego-boosting attention, the boys want to have sex with the girls.

The real leaders of the love death squad are the men in their 40’s. Now before all the deaf music lover boys get their boxer briefs in a wad, let me state that wrinkly raver fellas are NOT evil. However, they have reached a point in their lives where they justify their actions with a life-is-short mentality. Therefore, they take what they want and leave what they want. All of that glow-stick-watching pill popping in the 90’s has made them overly sensitive to even the slightest real relationship. Sometimes, they manage to find a girl who convinces them to try on the boyfriend sweater vest. Six months later, at the most, they have a panic attack and tell all of their like-minded dj buddies how lucky they are not to be tied down again. There is a reason these men are single in their 40’s. Anything in the realm of compromising is equivalent to attending a gig with a prerecorded set.

Lastly, we have the women in their 30s and 40s. These women have been seasoned by their 20’s like a pair of JNCOs at a rave festival. They have dated their fair share of djs, caught at least one mild STD, acted like the crazy girl multiple times in relationships, paid for dinner more than they will admit, texted a guy too much, and approached for sex like a thousand times. These women grow into old women who write off dealing with men completely. They die bitter and strong as hell.

So, there you have it. Sex, drugs, and alcohol. Everyone is free and loving and feeling at-one with the most dope sounds in Orlando. But true love is hard to find.

Orlando’s most flavored taste makers have come back home. Lazy Afternoon Sundays at the end of each month will be going down AND with some serious special guests!

This month we have Bobbito Garcia a.k.a. Kool Bob Love returning with love alongside DJ Nigel Jon on the opening set.

——————————————————————————

BOBBITO

NYC native and world-renowned DJ Bobbito Garcia is the critically acclaimed author of Where’d You Get Those? NYC’s Sneaker Culture: 1960-1987 (Testify Books). The former NY Knicks/MSG Network halftime reporter was the voice of EA Sports’ popular NBA Street video game and TV host of ESPN2’s “It’s the Shoes” series. In 2007, Nike released seven co-designed Air Force 1 sneakers bearing his signature. In 2013, Garcia co-directed the film Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball, NYC. Currently, he is the announcer for ESPNU’s Elite 24 Game and his own tournament Full Court 21™. “Kool Bob Love” is also directing his next film titled Stretch And Bobbito, due for release in 2015.

From 1990 to 1998, García co-hosted The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show on WKCR. It featured exclusive demo tapes and in-studio freestyles from many then-unsigned hip hop artists such as Nas, Big Pun, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe, Cam’ron, DMX, Wu-Tang Clan, Fugees, Talib Kweli, Big L and The Notorious B.I.G. who later found great success on major record labels.[4] He set up the vinyl-only label Fondle ‘Em Records in 1995 as an outlet for other guests such as MF DOOM, MF Grimm, Kool Keith and Cage. In 1998 The Source named The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show as the “Best Hip Hop Radio Show of All Time”.[citation needed]

In 2000 hip hop artist Necro included a Live freestyle from a Bobbito WKCR show recorded on 4/20/2000 on his debut album “I need Drugs”. The two have collaborated as early as 1994.

In 2003, García created Bounce: From the Playground,[citation needed] a quarterly magazine devoted to streetball, especially the playground scene in New York City. He has been an editor, writer, and photographer for the magazine, and has also done work for and been featured in magazines including Vibe and The Source. He wrote Where’d You Get Those?: New York City’s Sneaker Culture 1960-1987. He hosted the ESPN show It’s the Shoes, interviewing celebrities about their sneaker collection. He was featured in the sneaker documentary Just for Kicks and performed the announcer’s voice in NBA Street Vol. 2, NBA Street V3 and NBA Street Showdown. He is emcee of the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest in the video game NBA 2K8, 2K9 and 2K10.[citation needed]

In 2006, Madison Square Garden Network hired García to do the “Hot Minute at the Half” reports with celebrities in the crowd during Knicks home games. He became the first Latino broadcast member in the 60-year history of the franchise.[citation needed] In 2007, he worked with Nike on limited edition Nike Air Force 1 and Air Force 25 models, selecting the colors, fabrics and logo used, and designed the “Project Playground” limited edition of the Adidas Superstar.[citation needed] In 2009, he worked on Blokhedz animated web series on Missiong.com.[citation needed]

García is the annual Boost Mobile Elite 24 HS All-American Game play-by-play announcer for ESPNU, owner of the vinyl-only label/imprint Álala Records, and co-directing, with Kevin Couliau, the documentary Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-up Basketball, New York City by 360 Creative Films, which premiered in New York theaters in June 2013.[5]

Enei

Words from Facebook:

Sceneorlando LIVE is proudly hosting Critcal Music artist

Enei

Hailing from St. Petersburg in Russia it was way back in 2003 that a young Alexey Egorchenkov first got the taste for the musical drug Drum & Bass. Like many others before him he became hooked, dabbling with his own production and DJing soon after. Taking the artist name Enei his career began to blossom giving him star status in his beloved Russia and far but it wasn’t until 2007 that things really began to escalate.

During this year Enei earned his first official release on the Dutch label Fokuz but it was the first of many as others began to drop on other imprints such as Blu Saphir, Cyanide and Citrus throughout 2008 and 2009. Whilst his productions and profile began to take shape a certain eagle-eyed label boss, renowned for his supreme A&R’ing, was keeping close tabs on him; it wasn’t long before the phone call was made and Kasra secured the first Enei release for Critical Music at the end of 2010. The rest as they say, is history.

Releasing the Andy C favourite ‘Cracker’, ‘One Chance’ and the much lauded ‘Stone Head EP’, Enei’s Critical discography is relatively short but seeing the sheer talent within Kasra signed him exclusively for the label in 2011. It was Enei’s biggest year and to top it off he came away the ‘Best Newcomer Producer’ accolade at the end of year Drum & Bass Arena Awards.

As we enter 2012 things are only getting better for Russia’s number 1 producer/DJ; his debut album is complete and scheduled for early summer whilst a slew of remix work continues to pour in. With his music supported by Goldie, London Elektricity, Bailey, DJ Hype, Andy C, Kasra and many more, and an ever increasing DJ’ing schedule, you can guarantee this is merely the start of it as one of the most exciting of the new producers generation in electronic music today continues to make his way.

Special Edition on a Sunday

We are very excited to veer from our normal format of the first Saturday for this Edition of :::LIVE:::

Pat Fontes

Pat Fontes’ knowledge of electronic music has made him into what many have stated as a connoisseur of sorts. With almost two decades of DJing experience on his resume from the underground to clubs all over the world this former owner, manager, music buyer of the now legendary Satellite Records Boston has built a strong reputation for himself. He is the man responsible for one of Boston’s longest running underground house, techno, and electronic oddities weeklies at the Phoenix Landing Wednesdays. It went by many names but was most well known as Midweek Techno with his friends Soul Clap. He has had the honor of being exposed to many industry heavy-weights and has opened for the likes of Martin Buttrich, Paco Osuna, The Orb, Timo Maas, Cassy, Pan Pot , Layo & Bushwacka, Peace Division, Chris Fortier just to name a few.

Pat is now pushing boundaries again and providing his own dirty, sweaty, synth infected, sexy swag to his DJ sets and original productions. His sound falls under the umbrellas of techno & house but he has always developed his own unique spin on these genres and tends to bend every aspect of conventional thoughts towards them. He has had releases on well known labels such as Thoughtless Music and Airdrop Records. Now with many remixes and originals coming, Pat has joined a new pack of like minded artists on Prisoner of Love Records – Private Business – Proper Slap – Tight Groove – to name a few

Being quoted by his peers as “Mr. Techno” this humble encyclopedia of electronic music knowledge has been there, and done that, and is still finding ways to capture the imagination of others through his music!

Life’s too short… listen to music !
