8 Things to Do In Orlando This Week 5-18 to 5-21-2015

Here’s a list of things to do in Orlando this week from Monday to Thursday. Some nights are live music. One is an art opening. Another contains comedy.  Another involves a DJ spinning classic soul. Hope you find something you like.

1. Monday, May 18: The In-Between Series: Jim Ivey’s Tangled Bell Ensemble: The Gallery at Avalon Island on 39 S Magnolia Ave.  7PM to 8PM
Jim Ivey

Words from Facebook:

The Gallery at Avalon Island presents Jim Ivy’s Tangled Bell Ensemble performing “Midaregami”. This is a free event. Donations are suggested. Show will start precisely at 7pm. Also, the Empanada food truck will be on location.

Anna Wallace, voice
Andrew Toth, trumpet
A.J. Herring, trombone
Jim Ivy, reeds
Sarah Morrison, violin
Matthew Davis, cello
Steven Head, guitar
Thomas Milovac, bass
Elizabeth Baker, piano
Nick Boutwell, accordion
Evan Shafran, drums
Midori Imhoof, Japanese text

The main goal of this exploration is to juxtapose seemingly conflicting concepts and approaches, and display them in an aligning way; to show how antagonistic forces and unfamiliarity can create a cooperative friction and become formidable allies. The intent being that all portions of the whole (notated music, text, improvisation) were at once independent of and mutually dependent upon each other; symbiotic. Each being a part and apart simultaneously.

This piece is based upon the 400 tanka poems collectively known as Midaregami (Tangled Hair) written by the Japanese author, Akiko Yosano, and is presented as more of an experimental exercise than a completed work.

2. Tuesday, May 19: 20 Watt Tombstone (ex-The Goddamns) with Johnny Knuckles and the Handsome Bastards, and Bear in the Woods: At Will’s Pub on 1042 N Mills Ave.

About:
Formerly The Goddamns. Since the bands formation in 2007, the Wisconsin Duo has been recieving an unreal amount of attention. Their brand of brash untethered alt. blues rock mixed with country and punk blends into a sometimes comedic monster that cannot be easily pinned down, and at times seems so over the top it cant be serious.

3. Tuesday, May 19: Soul Shakedown: 11PM to 2AM at Will’s Pub on 1042 N Mills Ave.
